Faith Formation

Faith Buddies Program

We have implemented a unique program that pairs older and younger grade levels, fostering a sense of community and providing an opportunity for spiritual mentorship. Through our Faith Buddies program, older students are paired with younger students to attend weekly Mass together, guiding and supporting their younger peers in learning about their faith. This program not only allows older students to deepen their own understanding and practice or the faith but also provides a nurturing environment for younger students to learn and actively engage in the Mass. By fostering these cross-grade relationships, the Faith Buddies program promotes a sense of unity, mentorship, and spiritual growth among our students, which contributes to a solid foundation in the faith.

Sacraments

At Our Lady of the Snows, the sacraments play an integral role in the spiritual journey of our students and allow for our students to deepen their relationship with God. The sacraments allow for children to grow in their faith and become more active members of the Church.

Sacraments in 2nd and 8th Grade

In 2nd grade, students typically prepare for and receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. First Reconciliation, also known as Confession, allows students to experience God's forgiveness through the sacrament of confession, where they confess their sins and receive absolution. First Holy Communion is a significant milestone in the Catholic faith, marking the reception of the Eucharist for the first time. Students participate in a period of preparation, learning about the significance of the Eucharist as the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ before receiving the Holy Eucharist, fostering a deeper connection with God and the community of faith.

In 8th grade, students prepare for and receive the sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation is a sacrament of initiation where students receive the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit, strengthening their faith and deepening their commitment to the Catholic Church. Through the sacrament, students are encouraged to take on a more active role in the Church and become witnesses of Christ in the world.

If a student has not been baptized or has not received the sacraments of First Communion, Reconciliation, or Confirmation, it is recommended to contact the school or parish office for further information. They will be able to provide guidance on the process of initiation into the sacraments and assist families in navigating the necessary steps to receive these sacraments in accordance with the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. If your child has received these sacraments, please provide a copy of the certificate to the school office so it can be filed in your child's academic records.

Service

Service Hours

7th and 8th-grade students are required to dedicate time outside of the school day volunteering at school, church, and in the local community. This requirement aligns with our Catholic values of compassion, social justice, and service to others. Our hope is to foster in our students a sense of empathy, responsibility, and a commitment to making a positive impact in their community. By engaging in service, students learn to put their faith in action and develop essential life skills while embodying the teachings of Christ.

Community Service

Throughout the school year, our entire community also participates in service opportunities, such as a Thanksgiving food drive and collecting toiletries and non-perishable items for our students to assemble bags for the homeless in the Chicagoland area. School-wide service initiatives promote a collective sense of responsibility, unity, and empathy among students, educators, and families. These opportunities allow us to create a positive impact that extends beyond individual classrooms, cultivating a shared commitment to serving others and making a difference in the world.
